Gas Shortage

Buildings, Commercial Buildings, Transportation, Automotive, "Sign of the Times" A Not too unfamiliar sign indicates a message that the fuel shortage has indeed found its way to the Copper Country. Other signs of the crisis recently have been the voluntary closing of many gas stations on Sundays and the rising cost of gas. Schools - Morrison Elementary

Buildings, Public Buildings, Education, The renovation of the Morrison Elementary School in Calumet, which is nearing completion, has included the installation of fire escapes at either end of the four-story brick building. Inside, fire doors and smoke enclosures have been installed. The interior has also been completely repainted. [Exterior view of the brick building and the newly installed fire escape.]

Cities and Towns - Lake Linden

Buildings, Dwellings, Housing, Single Family, Transportation, Roads, Accidents Workmen in Lake Linden have begun cleaning out the mammoth hole that appeared in the villages main street, caving in a part of the intersection of M-26 and Eighth Street. Street Commissioner Joseph Kalcich, foreground, said a hole in a catch basins tile allowed the heavy runoff from melting snow and rain to undermine the roadway. A village truck parked at the site slid into the hole when the cave in occurred. Repair work will begin following further inspection of the damage by state highway department officials. Biography - Soichiro Honda

Persons, Education, The speaker at Michigan Tech commencement exercises on May 18, is called a "fascinating" man and his life story is a "true rags to riches and sticktoitiveness" one. People who know him say he is still more at home with grease on his face and a wrench in his hand. Another unusual feature of his address, in addition to his trip here from Japan, is that he will deliver his address in Japanese through an interpreter. [Head and shoulders shot of Mr. Honda]

Copper MInes - Centennial No. 3

Metal Trade, Copper Industry and Trade, Copper Mines and Mining, Buildings, Centennial No. 3 from which Homestake Copper company will begin hoisting ore in the new key project pilot program, now presents a delapidated exterior, but is structurally sound, company engineers say. The building will be given a new covering and various material handling equipment will be installed. The mill for processing the ore will be erected directly north of the rockhouse. In the background, lower left, can be seen the rockhouse at Centennial No. 6 where the separate, main project of shaft sinking and exploration continues. [Beginning mining operations at Centennial]

Mills - Freda

Metal Trade, Copper Industry and Trade, Copper Mines and Mining, Buildings, This boiler house and coal chute at the old Champion Mill at Freda came tumbling down after being set in motion by a dynamite charge. The mill closed on Nov. 5, 1967, and has been in the process of being salvaged since almost that time. Clarence Durocher is the director of operations and Robert Sten and Leo Durocher were on hand to complete final arrangements for the collapse of the tower. [Mining remnants at Freda.]

Mining Companies - Homestake Copper Company

Persons, Metal Trade, Copper Industry and Trade, Copper Mines and Mining, The joint interests in Homestake Copper Company's project here met this week in the firm's geological department at the Kingston Mine. They also examined the ore specimen donated to the Copper Country Rock & Mineral Club for use in marking the gravesite of Douglass Houghton. Near the copper boulder, from left, are Paul Henshaw, president of Homestake Mining Co.; O. E. Anderson, manager of Homestake Copper Co., and R. J. Hall, assistant to the vice president of the International Nickel Co., of Canada, Ltd. Henshaw stopped in Calumet while enroute from New York to Homestake's home office in San Francisco, while Hall was here to meet with Anderson and others regarding the latest aspects of the project.
