Twenty-five cars and six trailers can receive service here without causing any type traffic jam on the M-26 highway nearby. The stand is only 200 feet or so from Portage Channel. Cities and Towns - Rockland

Human Settlements, Transportation, Roads, Sign and Signboards Rockland really exudes some of the old atmosphere it possessed 60 years ago when the Michigan Mine, successor to the former Minnesota Mine, was working. There is more quietness today, however, in that the economy comes from Ontonagon and White Pine rather than from within itself as it did when the Michigan and former Minnesota were working. Here, on the approach from National Hill, Rockland appears like a little Wisconsin rural hamlet. Only the water tank is not visible. [Photo taken from the road leading into Rockland.]

Copper Mines - Homestake Copper Company

Metal Trade, Copper Industry and Trade, Copper Mines and Mining, Sign and Signboards, Woody Plants, Trees While most "thermometer" signs register success by rising, that of the Homestake Copper Company of Calumet shows progress by falling. The sign is an indicator of the Centennial No. 6 mine dewatering projects, showing the original level of the water in the mine and its removal to date. The 31st level was reached this past Saturday. Bailing began April 2 when the water was at the 27th level. The thermometer in this case is the mine's shaft. [Photo of the sign indicating the progress made in removing water from the mine.]
