Buildings, Commercial Buildings, Restaurants, Persons, Funkeys Karma Kafe opened in the Jerry Stowe hotel building Friday with a beneficial attendance in all respects. At noon, exactly, there was a formal ribbon cutting with mayor Gerald Bond, Clerk William Voght and members of the council in the complimentary assemblage. Here the ribbon is being cut for the restaurant which actually is founded on a philosophical bent, as you sow so shall you reap. This is the significance of the Karma characterization. The meatless eatery specializes in varied ice cream flavors and in the widely known vegetation dishes. Friday it was a more profound type of pea soup which was on the menu. Bridges - Portage Lake Lift Bridge

Transportation, Automotive, Transportation, Bridges, Repair work on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge had scores of cars at a standstill. The bridge is fed from three streets totalling four lanes from the Houghton side into just one lane while construction is in progress. The traffic jam held up motorists as long as a half hour at one time and lasted over a period of several hours. Cars were backed up through downtown Houghton as far as Franklin Square eight blocks away. Traffic from Hancock to Houghton flowed more freely. Biography - Percy N. Ross

Persons, , Born November 22, 1916 in Laurium to immigrants from Latvia and Russia, Percy Ross, was a flamboyant millionaire-turned-philanthropist who doled out cash to readers in his syndicated column for nearly 17 years. Through his column "Thanks a Million," he handed out as much as $30 million. Mr. Ross died in 2001 at the age of 84. [Head and shoulders photo of Mr. Ross.]

Emergency Vehicles

Harbors, Docks, , Ed Hoyer of the Portage Lake Marina drives the amphibious "duck" out of the canal during one of its daily exercises. The vehicle, obtained by the Houghton County Office of Emergency Measures, has been used to clear the channel of debris and logs and is being prepared for fire fighting. Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company truck

Beverage Processing Plants, Breweries, , Door to Ford 800 delivery truck [Painted on door is "Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co. Chippewa Falls, Wis." Leinenkugel bought out the Bosch Brewing Company of Houghton in September 1973. The beer was brewed in Wisconsin for several years before Leinenkugel ceased production. Buildings - Churches

Buildings, Church Buildings, , The National Evangelical Lutheran Church at Eighth and Elm Streets in Calumet will observe the 75th anniversary of the building of the church. The present structure was built by Finnish immigrants. It was the second church that the Finnish people of Calumet helped build. The first was completed in 1876. It was built together with the Swedes and the Norwegians and was called Trinity Church. [Exterior view of the church.]
