Dams - Redridge

Earthwork, Dams, Woody Plants, Trees, The building of the Redridge Steel Dam by the Wisconsin Bridge and Iron Works of Milwaukee was started in 1901 and completed in 1902 along with the completion of the Baltic Mill for which the dam was originally intended. The steel dam impounded water on the Salmon Trout River for about one and one-half miles upstream. Here the process of construction is proceeding with heavy concrete enforcements on each end of the dam and trestle. [Photo showing a broad view of the construction. Dams - Redridge

Earthwork, Dams, Woody Plants, Trees, Water, Lakes The Redridge Log Dam that impounds the water of the Salmon Trout River was built in 1891-92 by the Atlantic Mining Co. to supply its mill (wash) with water for processing copper. In 1901-02 the Baltic Mining Co. built a new large steel dam just 75 ft. north of the log dam and this steel dam supplied water for both the Baltic and Atlantic mills until their closing - the Atlantic in 1912 and the Baltic in 1922. The photographer was standing where the "gates" were later constructed which controlled the flow of water from the steel dam that had impounded water from the Salmon Trout River. This construction took place in 1901-02 and was completed at same time as that of the dam and the Baltic Mill in 1902. [Image of the construction of the spillway. Human Settlements, Cities and Towns, Buildings, Seasons, Winter Redridge in 1912. Population was 1,100 with 900 in the town and 200 along the lake shore communities. This town wanted to incorporate as a village in 1916, but when the mining companies threatened to double the rent per month from $1/room to $2/room of each house, the plan was dropped. It had 170 children as students in the school from grades K-8. It had a large general store, a candy store, a barber shop, two boarding houses and three band organizations.
