The Beacon Hill - Freda School has now passed into history. This picture of the school was taken shortly before dismantling operations began. The school was built in 1902-3 and closed in 1947. Now there are only two schools left in operation in Stanton Township - Redridge and Toivola. Schools have been closed over the years other than the Beacon Hill-Freda school are Onnela, Obenhoff, Canal, Heinola, Liminga, Oskar, Rauhala and Perala. Once, under the superintendency of Earl B. Holman, there were 11 schools, with more than a thousand children. Now there are only two schools with fewer than 200. Former superintendents of the district were F. J. Erickson, W. J. Caswell, E. B. The Beacon Hill-Freda Catholic Church will observe its 50th anniversay on Sunday, Aug. 23, at Beacon Hill with a community social and picnic on the lawn of the old Koepel residence. The church "by the side of the road" has withstood the ravages of time and circumstance and will be the scene of happy renewal of acquaintances all day Sunday. Hancock merchants display their wares on Quincy Street as part of a three day promotion. Today is a dollar day, tomorrow finds the Hancock Street Fair, and Saturday low prices will continue. This sign typifies to tourists and visitors to Keweenawland that the area is a timber resource in addition to its being an oldtime copper region. The sign indicates the largest, most northerly sawmill in Michigan. The Seneca area is also the site of the Seneca Mine, owned by the Calumet Division of Calumet and Hecla, Inc. Another of the Copper Country churches erected shortly after the 1900's will be razed. This one is the Centennial Methodist Church erected in 1906, off US 41, Centennial, and which has been advertised in the Gazette for sale on bids. In recent years only the basement of the structure has been used for meetings.
