Standing 12 feet high and weighing over a ton, this giant logging wheel at Curwood Park is one of several historical attractions at the park. The wheel was left by early loggers in the Huron River before being reconstructed by members of the Baraga County Historical Society. Much revered is this burial plot of the James Kirk Paul family. The location is the Evergreen Cemetery on the Greenland Road to Ontonagon. It details how the founder of the village of Ontonagon, Paul was born in 1814 and died in 1881. He came to Ontonagon from Platteville, Wis. with a half-breed Indian. He made friends with the Ontonagon red men and gained their aid in moving the great Ontonagon boulder which was located near the current Victoria Dam near Rockland. Paul's wife, Amanda, also is buried in the cemetery. As the sign indicates, he is the founder of Ontonagon which is Indian for "I lost my bowl." [Photo of the James K.
