Description: Miners wife readying dinner on the back porch in Calumet, MI. Every day was worrysome for a miners wife, with mine cave-ins and mine fires happening periodically. Many mines had no compensation for widows. And life was tough enough in the Copper Country even without a family to provide for. However, the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co. was unique in compensating many adverse predicaments which gave the miners security.
