Title: Copper Mines - Caledonia
Photographer: Gazette Photo
Subject Headings: Metal Trade - Copper Industry and Trade - Copper Mines and Mining, Woody Plants - Trees,
Condition: Good
Description: This photo shows an early Caledonia scene. Taken at the time when Calumet and Hecla, Inc. was preparing to adapt the property for mining, it reveals the adit and surroundings. Today the adit is thoroughly revamped. The explosion which killed two men is of a type seldom experienced in the Copper Country mining area. The presumed cause, methane gas, is also known as marsh gas. [Image of the opening of the mine showing the rail tracks leading into it.]
