Ships, Passenger Ships, Ferries, Water, Lakes, Bound for Bootjacks Dreamland. With summer in the offing and with a realization that the Portage Lake district no longer has an excusion train or boat operating in the area it might be well to refresh ones self with the active days of the Nichevo which still is in the Bayfield and Madeline Island area of the Badger State. Here the Nich, one of two, is seen moving on Portage waters with Frank Dexter, now of LaCrosse, Wis., acting as deckie. The owner of the craft is Harry Nelson of Madeline Island. The New Nichevo is operating via a merged firm, the Madeline Island Ferry Service. Currently, the former Nichevo, the one pictured, is undergoing refurbishing. Buildings, Seasons, Winter, An enclosed three flight stairway, which was built in the 1940's on the Cohodas-Paoli produce building in Houghton, is being dismantled by Mattila Contracting to make way for a new front on the building. The stairway was erected for the purpose of providing a separate entrance to the third floor of the building where at that time was located a dressmakers shop to employ women of the area during the World War II years. It was used as a branch of Ely Walker, clothing manufacturer, but was only in existence for a few years. [Photo of the demolition of the stairway. A snowy Ripley Hill is in the background.]

Fires

Persons, Accidents, Fires, Seasons, Winter C. C. Workshop fire. Smoke and water damage was extensive but apparently little, if any, equipment was destroyed in a fire which broke out at 5:40 p.m. Monday in the Copper Country Workshop here, the former Rowe Transfer Company building near Condon Field. Hancock Fire Chief Harry Warmington said the fire, apparently started by defective wiring, originated in the northwest corner of the first floor near the elevator shaft. The fire spread to the second floor following the outside of the elevator shaft. A small engine repair shop operated by the Adams Township School System, located on the third floor of the building, was also affected by the fire. William Mannisto, superintendent, said there was heavy water and smoke damage. No one was in the building at the time of the fire. As of yet, no damage estimate was available. The Hancock Fire Department had the fire under control by 8:30 p.m., but were called out again at 10:20 when it flared up again. [Only one fire truck is shown fighting the blaze.
