Logging

Persons, Woody Plants, Trees, Transportation William Emery logs in the vicinity of the Pinery. He consistently uses a horse to haul the pulp to central areas from which it is taken to the L'Anse Celotex plant to be manufactured into paper. The area here is thickly wooded and looks to the north and east into the environs of the Huron Mountain country. Other than the Porkies, this region is one of the few in the Upper Peninsula still conceived to be considerably untouched from the point of view of stone or metallic wealth. [Mr. Emery takes a rest on some of the logs that he has harvested.]

Bottle Collecting

Persons, Manners and Customs, Recreation, John Lahti holds a Calumet Brewing Company bottle he found near the Sleepy River in the general area about Misery Bay's "long" road to the Lake Superior shore. He located the container in the environs of Elm River Township and regards it highly because Calumet is quite a distance from Toivola by early Calumet brewery days. For some reason or other it appears that several Calumet bottles have come from the Sleepy River area. [Mr. Lahti displays one of the bottles he found.]

Keweenaw Point Rocket Launch

Persons, Woody Plants, Trees, Transportation, Automotive All was not work at the chilly Keweenaw Point rocket center. Here, from left, Lenard Williams and Mike Brian stop for a coffee brew. Lenard is a native of Tennessee while Mike, born in England, was very interested in the Cousin Jack phases of Keweenaw County. The truck is on loan from the U.S. Army at the Michigan Tech Keweenaw Field Station, Franklin Township location. [The two men take time out for a pot of coffee in a wooded area.]

Persons, Buildings, The reception room and main office of the new Baraga District Conservation Headquarters is this well lighted and glass enclosed central office where a visitor first notes the warmth of welcome by the office personnel and the three beautiful colored windows. Sports - Ice Fishing

Contests

Persons, Contests, In 8.2 seconds, the world famous Miljivich brothers, Eli and Vernon, ripped their way through this log with a crosscut saw. The first power saw to compete against them took about 22 seconds to slice the log. One other, an exceptionally powerful machine, tore through the timber in about three seconds. [The two men saw through the log while a crowd of spectators observe.]
