Road Construction

Transportation, Roads, Transportation, Automotive, Woody Plants, Trees Seven miles of highway, recently paved, between Quincy and Calumet was marked with white and yellow lines by the Michigan state highway department Thursday afternoon. Sunshine, an infrequent visitor in the area in recent days, made the painting project by this motor propelled machinery impossible following completion of the paving by the Thornton Construction Co. about two weeks ago. Pick up truck in rear set up rubber caution markers to permit drying of paint. [The painting crew attempts to paint the lines as traffic passes by.]

Kiwanis Chicken Barbecue

Agriculture, Persons, Manners and Customs, Recreation, Outdoor Recreation Approximately 700 residents and friends of the Copper Country attended the Kiwanis chicken barbecue Saturday at the ROTC gymnasium on the Michigan Tech campus. Last spring local Kiwanians purchased little chicks and distributed them to youths to be raised as a 4-H project. According to agreement, the original cost was returned to Kiwanis in the form of plump fryers which were promptly dispatched to the barbecue pits under the supervision of Matt Manderfield. To add flavor to the dinner Al Brown, the bunny man, gave on-the-spot entertainment. Since the profits from the barbecue are to be used for community youth services. President Sam Tidwell expressed his pleasure with the success of this first annual Kiwanis chicken barbeuce. It is a climax for the chicken project sponsored by the committee on agriculture and conservation under the chairmanship of Dr. Robert Brown. [The members grill and baste chickens on a open pit barbecue system.]

Agriculture - Cattle

Agriculture, Persons, Herefords here today and gone tomorrow - that was the situation at the second annual Hereford calf sale at the Bruce Crossing Livestock Yards Friday. They really sold well. Three hundred and ninety-seven calves brought a total return of $57,390 to beef cattle producers in Houghton and Ontonagon Counties. The new plant will hold its official "open house" on Saturday, October 18 and Sunday, October 19, 1958. The enterprise's plant and equipment cost a quarter million dollars. Keweenaw Radar Base

Ramon Milano of the Keweenaw Radar Base, Calumet, make a safety check on auto owned by Charles Belvan of the Houghton-Keweenaw Highway Traffic Safety Commission in first day of safety checks of autos in the Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw area. Autos will be inspected and tagged until 5:30 today and from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Calumet and Hecla security police parking lot east of Calumet Avenue. This is the second annual check-up of autos. Vehicles will be checked in the Hancock, Houghton, Lake Linden-Hubbell and South Range areas also. [Two military personnel check a vehicle while the driver sits at the wheel.]
