In deep snow, types of wheels and tires were tested to learn their properties and value. The unit at left provided the power and guidance for the wheels, which were scaled to one-fourth size. Some of the tires in the experiments have a tread four feet wide.

A snow cat with four caterpillar tracks climbed a snow hill in a demonstration of its ability. In the trenchlike area in front was a pole cat, an articulated vehicle consisting of two attached units, each with motive power and tracks.

Lake Superior milling figure 4. The temperary frame building was a combination engine, compressor, supply and change house, equipped with an 800 Cu. Ft. Ingersoll-Rand Straight Line Air Compressor; and American Hoist & Derrick Company Hoist, equipped with 3-4" hoisting cable; a steam pipe rack for drying the miners clothes, heated by the exhaust steam from the compressor; a small room used as an office, and a small supply room.
