Actually they are very real people and will march in the parade which is to be held in Calumet in conjunction with the high school reunion. South Shore Railway

Railroads, Cars, Earthwork, The South Shore Railway began moving Isle Royale stamp sand for ballast purposes on its routes Thursday as a rail crane with claw was put into operation. Twenty-five iron ore dump cars were switched on to the sands spur and were loading by 2:30 p.m. The crane operates differently from the one used on the plot in 1957. It moves on an inside spur track. Last year the loading was done by a traction type crane. [Image of the crane loading sand into the D.S.S. & A. cars.]

Buildings - Gas Stations

Buildings, Garages, Industries, Service Industries, Transportation, Automotive Rays Phillips 66 service station in Chassell is one of the most modern of such structures in this area. Located at the south end of Chassell on US-41, it sports new mercury lights, new servicing equipment and other features that will benefit the customer and his vehicle. Ships - Ranger III

Ships, Passenger Ships, Ships, Shipbuilding Industry, Buildings Ranger III, newest of the three Ranger craft on the route between Houghton and Isle Royale. The ship was christened in Sturgeon Bay Saturday noon before a large group of Copper Country and Sturgeon Bay area observers. The craft is particularly striking, being built along modernistic lines. Ships - Mackinaw

Ships, Ice Breaking Vessels, Water, Lakes, Transportation, Bridges The Burly Mackinaw, the Paul Bunyan of the Great Lakes, proceeds to pass through the open Portage Lake drawbridge. The Mack is more than 70 feet in beam. Here it is shown reversing engines in order to go through the draw without touching the center and side piers. Lighthouses - Jacobsville

Aids to Navigation, Lighthousers, Water, Lakes, Woody Plants, Trees The old Jacobsville Lighthouse . This was a valued beacon in days before 1913 when Jacobsville sandstone found outlets in scattered states of the union. Much of the redstone was shipped by boat and thousands of craft have used its beams to guide them to Portage Lake and the Keweenaw Waterway. The lighthouse is an attraction of Houghton County. American Indians

Ethnology, America, Indians, Manners and Customs, Clothing and Dress, Water, Rivers, Waterfalls Baraga Countys Chief Herbert Welsh greets vistors to the great Huron Mountain country. He symbolizes the large Indian poplulation in the county. He is of Sioux parentage but his wife is a Baraga County Chippewa native. He resides in LAnse. [The chief stands by a stream and waves to the camera.]

Buildings - Clubhouses

Buildings, Clubhouses, Persons, The New Legion Clubhouse for Alfred Erickson Post 186 has been recently acquired by the Hancock body from the Houghton County Board of supervisors. Built in the late 30's by the N.Y.A., it will be completely renovated, moved back 20 feet from the road and set upon a new concrete basement. The Hancock legionnaires plan to spend several thousands of dollars to make this structure one of the finest in the Copper Country. The structure is a "T" shaped building and is 84 feet in length. Located on M-203 in west Hancock, the property will encompass several additional lots which will be used for parking area. On hand recently to open study of renovating plans were from left, Gabriel Masini, John Jacobson, Richard Hoyer, Dan MacDonald, W. H. Rahio, Arvid Wedmark, Ed Gillest, John Niemi and Al Murphy.
