Transportation - Vintage Automobiles

Transportation, Automotive, Persons, Jerry Dion, left, of Lake Linden and Lanny Pirkola of Copper City are among those hoping to organize an antique auto club in the Copper Country. The benefits to the members could include greater ease in obtaining parts, a sharing of knowledge and restoration work bees, whereby "a lot of cars sitting in garages can be made operative again." The vehicles shown are, from left, Dion's 1929 Model A, a 1927 Buick and a 1937 Ford owned by Gary Raisanen of Calumet. [The two men pose with their automobiles.]

Post Offices - Greenland

Buildings, Carriers, Postal Service, Seasons, Winter Greenland and Mass really are living up to their traditional designations. The duo town setup now has reached nearly 100 inches of snow for the season and the winter will not begin until Dec. 21. The current reading is 98.6. Greenland truly is like its namesake, Greenland near Iceland. As for Mass, although its name comes from copper, it also signifies "great mass of snow." Thus Mass, this year, is leading the snowfall parade in the midwest with Herman coming in at 80 inches and Delaware at 66.9 inches. Houghton airport has 62.2 inches to rate lowest. Sunday found the frigid Greenland post office area with so much snow that it almost blocked the window. Before the shoveler came the parcel box virtually was snow covered. Snowfall

Buildings, Manufacturing Process, Mills and Millwork, Saw Mills, Seasons, Winter Winona sure does get snow. Even the Riipa Lumber Co. sawmill in the Twin Lakes vicinity is proof of this. Sunday, a dark day, found the mill revealing this photo. One could walk from the former right of way of the Copper Range Railroad right up to the top of the building without trouble, so extensive is the snowfall. Because of environmental factors the Riipa mill may phase out of the sawmilling facet. Plainly, it appears there are just too many regulations. The firm will, however, remain in the lumber business and likely will enlarge its plant. [Image of the Riipa mill covered in snow.]
