Sports - Ball Teams

Manners and Customs, Recreation, Sports, Persons, The Calumet Businessmen's team of days gone by was a real speedy moving Nine in days circa 1905. So good was it that it had a picture taken that was almost two feet wide and the same dimension in length. The photo is the property of Mrs. Nick Kaiser whose husband was vitally interested in such sports in those early days. From left, upper, Harrington, Thomatz, Haskell, Kohlhaas and Wetherell. Joe Fenili, proprietor and chef at the Venice, has won during the years of proprietorship an enviable reputation as a chef. Firefighters - Ripley Fire Department

Fire Department, Officials and Employees, Fire Fighters, Manners and Customs, With apologies to Ripley's Believe It or Not, the world renowned chronicle of numerable oddities, the Ripley Fire Department provided one of the more humorous memories of the Copper Country Firemen's Association Torunament parade Saturday evening in Hancock. Fred Jaehnig right, proudly displays the department's standard. [Members of the fire department carry a banner for the Ripley Fire Department, established in 1911.]

Signs - Calumet Theatre

Historic Sites, Buildings, Civic Centers, Arts Facilities, Theaters, Human Settlements, Cities and Towns, Villages Calumet's village councilmen view the recently erected sign designating the Calumet Theatre as an official historic site in Michigan. The large, metal marker is two-sided and has raised lettering. It occupies a central spot in the small, shady park adjacent to the theatre. The council members from left, are Emil Primeau, Arnold Rosendahl, President. Frank Beatty, James Perko and Arthur Sutinen. Restoration of the theatre is now taking place. Communication - Telephones

, , This lone telephone booth sentry is performing good service at Lac LaBelle. In an isolated area, the booth is not what one would call a big money maker because of the reduced patronage in the area. The phone company has installed it, however, for caterance, it is indicated. The booth was placed in its current position May 26, 1971 and it is one of seven in Keweenaw County that caters to the resort areas such as Copper Harbor, Eagle Harbor and Eagle River. Of the seven, the ones in Copper Harbor are the busiest. [Photo of a phone booth which has all but faded from the landscape in the present day.]

Signs - Mohawk Stamp Mill

Manufacturing Process, Mills and Millwork, Sign and Signboards, Historical markers, Human Settlements Mohawk's stamp mill industry really came into being at the turn of the century but the mine which caused its origin was formed two year earlier. These figures are correct and the latter really is the one which caused most of the population to move from Gay for there was no longer an economy there once the mill ceased operation. Biography - Harley Sachs

Manners and Customs, Recreation, Family Recreation, Persons, Harley and his daughter play the game "Police State" which he invented. With the help of his daughters Belinda, Cynthia and Anna-Lena the playing pieces of the game are sanded, painted, boxed and labeled for shipment. Using parts made made by Superior Industries in Hancock, game boards laminated in Kalamzaoo and cards printed in Hancock, the family manufactures the game from their basement. Buildings - Post Office - Pelkie

Carriers, Postal Service, Buildings, Public Buildings, Transportation, Automotive Pelkie's busy little post office is smack in the center of the community. It caters to a big rural population with the hinterland being of an expanding nature. A new and modernized type structure, it is a credit to the small community which is easterly from Tapiola and not far distant from Baraga from which community the mail comes to Pelkie.
