Street Cleaning

Persons, Street Cleaning, This two-wheel cart was a popular conveyance in earlier days of Shelden Ave. Now the prized possession of Dick Richards, a village employee, the cart was brought into service last week for the first time in a dozen years. Houghton people this morning at 11 oclock when the photo was taken, recalled that Peepsock was the nickname of the man who controlled the vehicle for many a year in days long past. In those days the consistently prospective contents were much different that what is charged into the can today. Nowadays its mostly wrapper from candy, gum and what not. Dick is proud of his two-wheel cart. It saves him time and makes it unnecessary for him to carry the garbage distances. The conveyance is nicely painted and Dick believes it is a colorful addition to the street department. [Mr. Richards takes a "five" with his cart near the Lode Theatre.]

Riippa Sawmill

Sign and Signboards, Historical markers, Transportation, Roads, This sign on the outskirts of Ontonagon is getting considerable attention these days as tourists stop to reflect on the history of Ontonagon Country. This road earned a fair amount of money through its tolls. It was not completely planked until 1874. Prior to that, it was a most miserable pike notwithstanding its heavy use. It was the development of the Adventure Mine which brought about the planking. [Image of a rustic sign indicating it is the site of the toll gate on old miner's road from 1850 - 1870. Businesses - Copper Harbor - Minnetonka

Buildings, Recreation Area, Resorts, Copper Harbor is fast taking on the appearance of a small resort city. With supermarkets, root beer stands, jewelry and gift shoppes galore, taverns and hotel accommodations, the motel construction has proceeded at a fast clip this summer. Shown here is the Haskins lodge with its tree environment. [The famous Minnetonka Cabin and Gifts building is pictured.]

Copper Mines - Caledonia

Metal Trade, Copper Industry and Trade, Copper Mines and Mining, Woody Plants, Trees, This photo shows an early Caledonia scene. Taken at the time when Calumet and Hecla, Inc. was preparing to adapt the property for mining, it reveals the adit and surroundings. Today the adit is thoroughly revamped. The explosion which killed two men is of a type seldom experienced in the Copper Country mining area. The presumed cause, methane gas, is also known as marsh gas.
