Buildings - Atlantic Fire Department Hall

Buildings, Public Buildings, Fire Stations, Human Settlements, As neat as a motel, a ranch type house or a spick and span lumber company office. But it's none of these. It is the Atlantic Fire department hall, in all its delicate beauty. [Exterior view of the fire hall with a picket fence surrounding it. The post office is housed in the same building.]

Ahmeek Mine Shaft

Metal Trade, Copper Industry and Trade, Copper Mines and Mining, Buildings, Probably no mine shaft in Houghton or Keweenaw county receives as much attention in a photographic way as does the one at Ahmeek. One of the big producers of Calumet and Hecla, the mine is located on US-41 at a picturesque turn. Its characteristics invite much in the way of photography. Its poor rock pile is high and in direct line with the engine house and shafthouse. When spewing smoke it resembles a huge industry. The mine was incorporated back in 1880, and later two shafts were sunk. [Good photo of mining operations and buildings at Ahmeek Mine.]

Victoria Mine and Dam

Metal Trade, Copper Industry and Trade, Copper Mines and Mining, Earthwork, Dams, Water Contributing to the prosperity of Ontonagon county and especially the Rockland area was the Victoria Mining Co. of a few years back. Now but a series of foundations, abandoned buildings and vacant and windowless log houses, the old Victoria property is still the object of visitation by tourists and yesterday's resident who continue to come back to revision the scenes and happenings of a former day. Victoria Dam

Persons, Earthwork, Dams, Water When the Victoria Dam was under construction in 1930, it was heralded as the largest in the middle west. From end to end the dam measures 600 feet and it rises 120 feet above the river bed. The total head, including the dam and the drop in the river to the plant, is 205 feet. The development was built at a cost of over a million and a half dollars. The entire power project went over $7,000,000. Two hundred miles of native copper wire, smelted and rolled in the district, were used in transmission lines. It was in 1924 that Frank Speese, of Whitehall, Mich. visioned the possibility of harnessing the Ontonagon river to furnish electric power and light to the Copper Country. Delaware

Buildings, Dwellings, Woody Plants, Trees, According to summertime residents of Delaware, this long winged building used to be the old mine boarding house in the days way, way back. Legend has it that while Horace Greeley didn't live here, he did eat here. The barracks like building is used during the summer when delegations from out of state come to live in it and frolic about the once well-known mining area. Industries - Logging

Manufacturing Process, Persons, Woody Plants, Trees According to Foreman Supervisor Robert Funke of Baraga, there are about 5,000 cords of pulp logs on the Marathon Corporation lots at L'Anse. The clam is lifting poplar logs already peeled and loading them in gondolas for shipment to Wausau, Wis. for paper making. [Image of the massive amount of logs being readied for shipment.]

Businesses - White River Lumber Company

Persons, , Ludger Belanger and his good horse, Prince. Both of us work for the White River Lumber Co. says Prince's boss, and we like our jobs. Prince does, especially, because he's the most photographed subject in all Bergland. He's been "shot" so often that now he actually poses for the pictures. [Mr. Belanger and a tired looking Prince pose next to a pile of lumber.]
