The wise motorist takes it nice and s-l-o-w, especially at this time of year, when every turn in the road turns up a different view of Michigan's autumn color spectacular. Roads - M26

Persons, Manpower, Labor, Transportation, Automotive This crane, helping remove the viaduct from M26 near Lake Linden, wasnt exactly on the beam today, but it was pretty close. The machine was loading beams from the reinforced concrete viaduct onto a truck when too heavy a load toppled it into this undignified position. It took another crane and one small truck crane to get it back on its feet. The bucket in the picture was not being used, since the beams were being removed in a cable sling. Contests, Persons, Food Service A loaf of bread brought $25 for Mrs. Leonard Peltola on Friday when she won the King Midas bread baking contest. The award was announced at the Pelkie Dairy Day. [Mrs. Peltola holds the winning loaf of bread.]

Ships - Mesquite

Ships, Persons, Harbors, Docks The Mesquite is shown here as it prepares to leave the dock in Houghton for Isle Royale with 80 persons connected with the park aboard. The Mesquite will return to Houghton to work in the area and will go back to Isle Royale to bring the men to the mainland. In the event that the Mesquite is called to the Soo, the Woodrush will come up from Duluth and bring the men in. [Photo of the ship at what appears to be the Cahodas-Paoli dock.]
