Businesses - Copper Country Products

Manufacturing Process, , Vollwerth's "The King of Meats" [Image of one of the products (Old Fashioned Ring Bologna) of the sausage facility in Hancock, MI. The business was founded in 1915 by Richard Vollwerth, a German immigrant. He began making sausages in the basement of a house on Pine Street. The company is still in existence and produces more than two million pounds of meat products annually.]

Ships - South American

Ships, Passenger Ships, Persons, The South American had a large passenger list Tuesday night as it arrived in Houghton for one of its midseason trips. It was the most glorious weather of the season on Lake Superior - a night of calm waters and soft breezes; even the rain caused no big winds as Memorial Airport CAA officers clocked velocity at less than 10 miles per hour. Between Munising and Duluth the trip was delightful. Souvenir stands along Shelden Ave. were crowded last night as passengers sought mementos to carry home. Many already had woodenware souvenirs of their shore visits at Munising. [A crowd gathers at the dock to greet the passengers of the South American.]

Soap Box Derby

Manners and Customs, Recreation, Outdoor Recreation, Persons, Here they come, cried Matt Laitila, announcer who kept tab on the two finalists. Russell Niemi left, with his Douglass House racer and Roger Welch of Marquette and his H. L. Welch Contracting Firm arrow. Roger clipped the line at 23 seconds, becoming eligible to attend the National Soap Box Derby Race at Akron, Ohio. As soon as Laitila announced the start of the two at the ramps, a hush came over the crowd and it seemed as if everyone was holding his breath. Approaching the finish line, fans from the Copper Country and Marquette urged their favorite on with loud whoops of proddings. It was a photo finish. Lighthouse Keepers

Persons, Aids to Navigation, Lighthousers, The keeper of the light at the Keweenaw upper entrance, James E. Collins, retires after 39 years of maintaining a constant vigil over the beacons that have saved many a ship from foundering on the rocks on the Greake Lakes. Here Mr. Collins, left, is being congratulated and awarded the Albert Gallatin award Thursday at the Douglass House by group Commander M. F. Cramer, Chief Boatswain, USCG of the Marquette group. The award is bestowed by the U. S. Treasury Department and is in recognition of long service in the employ of the Federal government. Collins served the lighthouse group in 1919 at the Detroit River Light and in 1921 transferred to Point Iroquois, in 1931 to Middle Island, 1932 to Standard Rock, 1933 to Manitou Island, 1935 to Huron Island, and in October of 1951, to the upper entrance of the Keweenaw Light, where he has served since. During World War II he was on active duty in the U. S. Coast Guard. [Mr. Collins receives a congratulatory handshake from Commander Cramer.]

Parades

Persons, Manners and Customs, Transportation, Automotive The Jeffers High School band in its full regalia sparked the Soap Box Derby Parade this morning with firm step to martial music and gyrations of high stepping drum majorettes. Judy Aho is leadoff majorette, follwed by Lorraine Maki, Joan Klarich and Maria Harma. The band has been winning wide acclaim as both a marching and concert band. [The baton girls lead the band. A school bus can be seen in the background.]

Beaches - Houghton

Persons, Manners and Customs, Clothing and Dress, Recreation Area Swimming is in full swing at Houghton's beach near the Michigan Tech golf course as scores of youngsters - and oldsters, too - were in the water Monday, under the watchful eyes of guards. Don Meyers and Harold Seppala, the same two who looked after the bathers last year. Here the youngsters illustrate their faith in their beach supervisors.
