This photo of the Quincy Smelter near the Houghton-Hancock drawbridge has received many far-flung compliments. Seen are some of the homes of Ripley, the residential nooks of the hillsides and the top, the Quincy plateau. Portage Lake reflects frigidity and snow while the water is still not ice surfaced, except for the shoreline areas at the bottom of the photo. Matchwood, some four miles east of Topaz, is titled for the fact that the area provided millions of cords of good pine timber for the matches made by the Diamond Match Co., whose mill was in the Ontonagon area and which burned to the ground in 1896 in a disastrous fire which also swept away most of the village.
