Michigan Tech Power House

Buildings, Persons, Power-Plants The E. Baumgardner Co. of Jackson began work Friday on the removal of the old boiler house stack from the Michigan Tech power house. About 150 feet high, the smoke outlet has not been used since the new boiler house began functioning. This new facility has three small outlets which admirably handle all smoke removal. At top can be seen one of the Baumgardner employees removing some of the loose brick. [A man balances on the very top of the smokestack.]

MTU Organizations

Persons, Societies, Church Societies, Religion in Life committee. These five students made up a part of the dozen-man group which met in the conference room of the Memorial Union Monday evening to plan the coming weeks program. Holidays - Halloween

Persons, Manners and Customs, Clothing and Dress, Tricks and Treats - Among the Houghton students who will participate in the drive for "Coin Treats" tonight will be, left to right, Jim Figge, president of the Houghton Student Council, Lois Laitinen and Peggy Chamberlain. Proceeds will go to the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. The trio visited the home of Mrs. Clyde Work in East Houghton Tuesday evening where they received treats from Mrs. Work, pictured on left, and Mrs. Corbin Eddy.[The children dressed in costume receive donations from the two women.]

Hunting

Persons, Manners and Customs, Recreation, Wildlife-Related Recreation, Hunting, Portage Lake District Men with Pheasant Catch - This was the way eight hunters bagged the long tailed species during a week in the Dakotas recently. Persons, Peace Officers, Police, Retiring campus policeman Elmer Jestila admires a wrapped gift from Leo Archambeau, Michigan Tech maintenance official, center, as Mrs. Jestila looks on. Pets

Persons, Peace Officers, Police, In The Arms Of The Law - Lobo the crow seems to be making great headway in his attempts to keep on the right side of the law, and Trooper James Dale of the Calumet Post, state police, doesnt seem to mind at all. The crow had half the surrounding area up in the air trying to find its owner, recently, with police checking from crow owner to crow owner, Lobo eventually was returned to a Kearsarge resident. The crow had been brought to the state police post by B. E. Maynard of Laurium. [Lobo sits on top of the troopers head and pecks at his police cap.]

Businesses

Buildings, Commercial Buildings, Stores, Retail, Contests, Best UNICEF Window in Houghton was what the judges termed this Ed Haas and Co. display on Shelden Ave. About 15 windows were decorated in intriguing lettering and style but the judges, W. Polkinghorne and Robert Haas, found this one most attractive. Houghton Junior High School seventh graders, who did the lettering, receive a $5 prize. The printing is as follows: "If you want to treat all the children of the world give to UNICEF. All pennies count." [Image of the store's display window and the message the children painted on it.]

Education

Education, Postsecondary Education, Education, Higher, Persons, Woody Plants, Trees Forestry Professor John Veenstra believes in the railroad adage "See America First." So he takes his botany class around the College Ave. campus where a great variety of ash, maple and elm trees grow. "It is well that students know first the trees in their own environment," he says. "Then they can branch out". This group listens in the shade to the instructor, left. When the unit completes the flora course it is ready for fauna (zoology) study. [The group of students pay close attention to the instructor who stands next to a large tree.]
