Manners and Customs, Festivals, Persons, |
Members of the Blue Key Fraternity on the Michigan Tech campus. Blue Key, a national honorary service fraternity, allows only thirty-five members in its chapters. These students must be juniors or seniors and in the upper one-half of their class before they can be nominated and voted into membership. Winter Carnival at the Michigan Tech campus is the most difficult task undertaken by any of the 100 Blue Key chapters in the United States. Tech's chapter includes eight faculty members. Winter Carnival was started in 1922 as a one-day affair. Blue Key has taken it a long way since that day thirty-seven years ago. [Members of the fraternity pose for a group photo.]

Winter Carnival- Queen |
Manners and Customs, Festivals, Persons, |
Winter Carnival would not be complete without a queen to reign over its activities. Lovely Lee Schirmer, as 1959 Carnival Queen, did her job with an air of perfection. Lee is the daughter of Tech's Air Force R.O.T.C. Colonel. she is a true southern belle from Texas, complete with southern accent. [Head and shoulders photo of the queen wearing her crown.]

Pictured are nine of the Winter Carnival queen candidates. Each was sponsored by one of the stronger organizations on campus. Although no points in Carnival competition are invloved in the Queen selection, it is a point of honor for an organization to have its candidate selected. Winter Carnival- Snow Statue |

First place winner in Class "B" competition was the Tech Wives Club, a portrayal of the ostrich cart. Perfection of detail again was the winning feature. The ostrich was very realistic with its bowed legs and proper proportion. The plumes of its tail actually appeared to be fuzzy. Title of the statue was "Tech Wives' Rare View." Winter Carnival- Snow Statue |

Theta Tau fraternity took Class "A" first place laurels with its presentation of "Sampanorama." Each icy sack of grain looked like it would certainly rattle and slump when picked up by the carved, oriental stevadores. Cracks in the boards and pilings of the dock emphasized the reality of the scene. Ornate detail of the roofs gave final testimony to the overall perfection of the statue. [Photo taken at night.
