Born in Eagle Harbor in 1867, he attended the Michigan College of Mines (now MTU) and served as an instructor of mathematics, drawing and mineralogy at the college. He later opened a mining engineering office at Houghton. In addition to mining work, he acted as village engineer for different villages in Houghton County as well as carrying on a general land surveying business. He was one of the organizers and first president of the Citizens National Bank of Houghton and the promoter and organizer of the South Range Bank of South Range. He promoted the Superior Saving Bank at Hancock, now Superior National Bank and served as director of the State Savings Bank at Laurium. In 1875, Mr. Edwards with his brother-in-law, G. C. Shelden built the first bridge across Portage Lake connecting Houghton and Hancock. He was one of it's largest stockholders as well as the engineer in charge of the work. The bridge was a toll bridge and opened to the public in 1876.
