Agriculture - Potato

Agriculture, Persons, Manners and Customs, Clothing and Dress Potato planting in the modern age is usually left to modern machinery or the man of the house, but Mrs. John Bacher, 71, of 2421 B. St. Raymbaultown location, Calumet, does not heed this. Here she is seen putting in the last of five bushels of spud seeds this spring. She also will plant her annual vegetable seeds. "My husband, who cant plant anymore cant fiugre out where I get all my pep," she said. Mr. and Mrs. Bacher will celebrate their golden wedding on July 23. Rodents - Rats

Persons, Nature Conservation, Wildlife Conservation, Oh rats - Residents of Hancock may not believe there are almost as many rats in the city as there are residents, but according to James Edgar of the Arwell Pest Control firm this is just about the case. Edgar, left, looks over some 300 dead rodents with James Bennett of the Houghton-Baraga-Keweenaw Health Department. Although all the kill is not visible in the photo some 300 rats were exterminated Thursday by bait dropped in rat holes at the Hancock dumping grounds. The poison, a fast acting anti-coagulant, has killed about a thousand rats in the brief period of 24 hours. [The two men look over numerous bodies of dead rats.]

Airports - Houghton County

Buildings, Transportation Buildings, Airport Buildings, Engineering, Construction of a $50,000 terminal building, will start this summer at the Houghton County Memorial Airport, it has been announced by Carl F. Winkler, County Engineer and Airport Manager. Included in the 40x68 ft. building will be the airport manager's office, airline offices, restrooms, boiler room, utility room, snack bar and a 40x24 ft. lobby with a large fireplace. The exterior will be of brick or Lannon stone. Sealed bids for the construction of the terminal will be received by the Michigan Department of Aeronautics at the Capitol City Airport in Lansing until 2 p.m. on June 17. The bids will be publicly opened and read, and construction will start soon thereafter says Mr. Winkler. Lyle P. Tonne is the designing engineer. [Sketch of the propsed airport building.

Biography - John R. Hendra

Carriers, Persons, John R. Hendra, Railway Express agent in Calumet, embarked on his 40th year of service with the Railway Express Agency, Tuesday. Here he holds the last parcel of the day's delivery. Hendra received a gold inscribed pin denoting 40 years of service. He started as driver in the horse and wagon days, was transferred to Marquette in 1925 as cashier and returned to Calumet in 1939. [Mr. Hendra smiles as he delivers his final package.]

Crimes - Vandalism

Buildings, Dwellings, Housing, Single Family, Peace Officers, Police, This unoccupied home owned by Mrs. Frank Plautz of 817 Ninth St. Calumet was the target of three seven-year old rock throwers Monday evening. John L. Sullivan, left, chief of police of Calumet Village said 95 windows were broken by the youngsters, the rocks passing through double panes in most instances. Parents of the youths will be liable for damages. [The police chief assess the damages caused by the children.]

Fish Hatcheries

Wildlife Utilization, Fisheries, Persons, Hugo Moilanen, orginally a Copper Country resident from Elo is pictured performing one of his duties at the Watersmeet hatchery. He is "feathering" the bottom of a tank containing many trout fingerlings. These fish are not yet old enough to be moved into the outdoor pools. Every day the bottoms of these indoor tanks must be brushed with a feather to move all of the debris to one end where it will be removed. Fire Department - Bootjack
