One of the colorful events of the early years of Hancock Elkdom was the participation of the Hancock Lodge in the big Elks National Convention parade held in Chicago in 1926. It was one of the first tourist promotion plans for the Keweenaw Peninsula. An enlargement of the photo hangs in the lodge rooms in Hancock. Here Ed Samuelson exhibits some of the polished stones he has inserted in rings. All are excellent examples of stones procured along Kenweenaw Peninsula Beaches. Agates abound. He also possesses a number of stones which have come from Isle Royale. [Ed shows some of the rings he has made. Characterized as one of the most attractive halls in the Copper Country is this stately structure in Rockland. Of brick composition, the eight year-old building houses a modern truck which occasionally travels to Mass or Ontonagon when large fires break out. All meetings of the department are held in its back chambers. The unit now has 27 members, almost all of whom are active. The department's chief is John Hoffman and the captain is Paul Yakovich. Retirement after 40 years of barbering in Houghton is a reward Charles Trevethan has earned. Here he greets the press with his familiar smile as he sits in the chair where uncounted thousands have rested comfortably while they were having their hair cut.
