Rock House - Champion Mine

Metal Trade, Copper Industry and Trade, Copper Mines and Mining, Buildings, Rock house at the Champion Mine in Painesdale. Once the shaft house of an independent firm, Champion for many years has been the property of the Copper Range Co. The structure is similar to most Copper Country shaft enclosures. Its form is considered characteristic of the region. The Champion produces some 4 million pounds of refined copper each year. [Exterior view of the shaft house.]

White Pine Copper Company

Metal Trade, Copper Industry and Trade, Copper Mines and Mining, Buildings, Manpower, Labor, Skilled Labor A long line of men wait for the White Pine buses just outside the gate and time shed of the White Pine Copper Co. As quickly as possible, they board the buses and soon are on their way back to Calumet and Lake Linden via Ontonagon, Mass, Painesdale, South Range, Atlantic and Houghton and Hancock. White Pine employs slightly under 3,000 persons. The company is operated by the Copper Range Company which originally worked mines in the Painesdale - Atlantic region. Copper Range began its White Pine operations in 1953. [Workers with their lunch pails line up outside the building.]

Dredges

Excavation, Dredging, Water, Lakes, The Col. D. D. Gaillard, consistent dredge visitor to Portage Lake and Ontonagon harbor. Serviced by either of two tugs, the Lake Superior (successor to the Gen. C. B. Sears) or the Marquette (successor to the Essayons), this steam dredge buckets its lake bottom sand into steel scows to be emptied in deep portions of water. Railroads

The site is St. Marys named for the St. Marys mine and the Mineral Land Company. The site today, is said to be immediately south of the hamlet of Boston. [A lone car travels the wooden trestle in winter.]
