Biography - Joseph Andreini

Persons, Manners and Customs, Recreation, Buildings, Sport Facilities, Bowling Alleys Joseph Andreini of South Range, 72 years of age, who was born in Lucca, Italy. He went to work for the Copper Range mines shortly after he arrived from the Mediterranean Sea area at the age of 18. Weighing only 155 pounds, he is 5'7" tall and he is wiry. He is married and the father of four children. He has been a Kegler 50 years, probably has been bowling longer than any other Copper Country person. He believes his love of the game came from the indoctrination he received on the Boccia ball lanes in Italy. [Photo of Joe in action.]

Labor Unions

Persons, Labor Movements, Labor Unions, Education At the Copper Country Conference workshop of the Labor and Industrial Relations Center sponsored by Local 4312 United Steelworkers of America, and the Labor Program Service of Michigan State University held at MTU. Charles Cole, conference chairman, right, was assisted by James Stukel, trustee of Local 4312, USWA, and Armand Gervais, bargaining committeeman of USWA. The three men were appointed to see that the workshop was held in the Copper Country, the first of its kind to be held here. [Three union officials are seated at a conference table. Porcupine Mountain Ski Area

Manners and Customs, Recreation, Sports, Winter Sports, Skis and Skiing, Seasons, Winter, Persons Department of Conservation's Snow-Cat is a highly adaptable machine. In airplane style it takes its occupants up and over the steepest hills on the Porcupine Mountain ski plot. The two drivers of the cat are shown near the machine, from left, they are Joseph Calabro and Arnold Anderson, both employees of the Department of Conservation. Mont Ripley

The time-honored skiing area of the Upper Penisnula, still ranks high as a hill despite its lack of a more pretentious chalet. Probably no area in the U. P. has such a variety of enticements, where the sportsman can choose from so many slopes, gentle and steep. [View of Mont Ripley in winter from the Houghton side.]

Buildings - Houghton County Juvenile Home

Buildings, Public Buildings, Seasons, Winter, Human Settlements, Cities and Towns The old Houghton County juvenile home in Houghton has outlived its usefulness. The building which once housed scores of wayward children throughout its long history is now slated for removal from the court house scene. Snow Removal

Seasons, Winter, Persons, Street Cleaning, Snow Removal William Rogers, 81, finds removing snow from his Greenland premises difficult these days. Not for a long time has the snow accumulated in the manner it has this year. The area has now received about 150 inches for the season. Bill is here shoveling the snow to the highway. It is six feet high where he stands. He is a former miner in the Adventure shafts and can tell many an interesting tale of the days when Greenland was in prosperous circumstances.[Image of Mr. Rogers shoveling snow. Clubs - Cub Scouts

Buildings, Societies, Manners and Customs, Recreation At the latest pack meeting of Cub Scout Pack No. 206 of Hancock and Ripley, 34 Cub Scouts and 36 parents enjoyed den skits on the theme of "Movie Makers". Den No. 4 put on "Massacre at Long Branch Saloon", a silent movie with printed cards to convey the dialogue. Mark Peterson was the two-gun hero, James Smith handled the announcements between scenes of "Mars Fantasy" by Den No. 1. [The scouts with their families in the back of the room are pictured. Some of the scouts are wearing cowboy hats and another wears a top hat. One of the boys plays the piano in the corner.]
