Snowfall

Seasons, Winter, Persons, Winter has hit the Copper Country full force in the last week but at least one man has the answer to all those snow shoveling woes. Michael Skoviak of Forest Street in Painesdale has constructed a tunnel that leads from the road to his back porch, a distance of about 125 feet. Mr. Skoviak piled the snow high enough and then used ice blocks in certain spots to keep it from falling down. The tunnel is complete with little windows. This is the first time that he has done such a project. His reason? "It was something to do." [Mr. Skoviak poses next to his ingenious creation.]

Signs

Seasons, Winter, Sign and Signboards, Historical markers, Photographed during a dull period in the morning the sign where the copper boulder of Ontonagon was found hardly is visible here. This site goes back to 1843 the same year that witnessed Keweenaw County starting its renowned Cliff Mine. Thus, in an aspect such as this, Ontonagon and Keweenaw counties are tied when it comes to being members of the great four county copper district. The site here is right down near the Ontonagon River as it now forms a dam of the Upper Peninsula Power Co. The location is truly one of historical significance. [The marker reads "Original site of famous copper boulder removed in 1843 - Now in national museum."]

Snowfall

Seasons, Winter, Persons, Theres no getting around winter in the Copper country - so why not go through it? Joseph Meneguzzo Jr., did just that at his parents home at 2042 Calumet Ave., Calumet. Joseph dug a 15-foot long tunnel leading from the homes front steps to the roadway. A neighboring teenager, Julie Rauch, shows that the passageway is ideal for toddlers, but that anyone taller had better use the Meneguzzos driveway for the sake of the sacroliac. [One of the neighborhood children kneels in the opening of the entrance carved out of the large snow bank.]
