Description: About 500 people gathered last evening at Chassells Pike River to dip for smelt in the annual smelt run. A spirit of Mardi Gras prevailed with unusual costumes, singing and tall tales of the Worcester towns long timber history. This little section, along the river toward Portage channel, is virtually smoke smothered from the bonfire. The time is 9 p.m. and the fire, though warm, is producing too much smoke. [A group of boys gathers around the bonfire holding their smelting nets and pails.]
