Description: Approximately 700 residents and friends of the Copper Country attended the Kiwanis chicken barbecue Saturday at the ROTC gymnasium on the Michigan Tech campus. Last spring local Kiwanians purchased little chicks and distributed them to youths to be raised as a 4-H project. According to agreement, the original cost was returned to Kiwanis in the form of plump fryers which were promptly dispatched to the barbecue pits under the supervision of Matt Manderfield. To add flavor to the dinner Al Brown, the bunny man, gave on-the-spot entertainment. Since the profits from the barbecue are to be used for community youth services. President Sam Tidwell expressed his pleasure with the success of this first annual Kiwanis chicken barbeuce. It is a climax for the chicken project sponsored by the committee on agriculture and conservation under the chairmanship of Dr. Robert Brown. [The members grill and baste chickens on a open pit barbecue system.]
