Saunas |
Buildings, Persons, Woody Plants, Trees |
One of the unusual saunas of the area is the one built and owned by Glenn Hallfast of Gay. It is built from cedar and is portable to the shores of Lake Superior. A special built trailer for the non-electric sauna was constructed from heavy steel. But when the lake isn't available, Hallfast finds the nearby bathtub handy for a dip after a beating with a birch bough. Heat holding, non crackable stones from Finland furnish the steam heat, above the wood burning stove. A one time resident of Finland, he has tried to incorporate the better design features of a Finnish sauna in this one. [Mr. Hallfast is photographed carrying tree branches as he is about to enter his sauna.]
