The afternoon's recreation was just getting underway in L'Anse as youngsters gathered from widely scattered areas in the community to enjoy an afternoon of skating. The rink is well kept, provides music and the changing house is warm and adequate for the large group usually in attendance. L'Anse area younsters enjoy the facility and appreciate its central location in the main part of the village near the baseball diamond. [A group of children enjoy the rink on what appears to be a cold afternoon.]

This scene is no different than it has ever been for youth of the Copper Country through the years. This group of Hancock boys had a lot of fun perspiring in the fresh air on Elm Street. Copper Country boys of the junior and intermediate leagues and those who have played on college hockey teams at Michigan Tech and Michigan State and the several who have played in the National Hockey League, got their first taste of hockey on foot "rinks" such as this one. Some mom's supper had to wait as can be noted by grocery box on the sleigh in right foreground. [Several of the neighborhood boys have a game on the snow covered street.]

"Shanty Town" Each January sees the rebirth of tip-up shanty towns on frozen Michigan lakes and bays as hearty ice fishermen pursue a variety of quarry. U.S. - 41 travelers are always assured of seeing these winter communities on Keweenaw Bay, one of the more popular Copper Country sites. But alas, the "towns" disappear with each spring thaw. One of the rites of spring took place in LAnse recently when ice fishermen brought in their shanties for the season. The shanties were lined up near the old LAnse dock, waiting to be towed away until next winter. It should be noted that at least a few brave ice fishermen still had their shacks out on the big lake when this picture was taken. [Several shanties are lined up on the shore.]
