Tuesdays chill 30-mile per hour fall winds drove five steamers to Lily Pond for shelter from bad weather off Manitou Island. The wharfing of the steamers near the Upper Entrance made for a population of some 175 sailors in the restricted Hancock Township area. Here the Huron Cement Co. ship, S. I. Crapo is tied to mooring basis cleats while the larger Tomlinson vessel, Merton Farr, rests with anchor down and aft lines tied to cleats, aft of the Crapo. The Farr is one of its fleets largest vessels at 580 feet and 12,000 tons. The Crapo is only 384 feet long. [Impressive photo of the two ships side by side.]
