"Michigan Tech - In 1885 the Michigan Mining School was established here by the state. Classes were held in temporary quarters until 1889 when Hubbell Hall was erected. Situated ideally in the midst of the Upper Peninsula's booming mining industry, the school soon ranked as one of the world's best mining colleges. Renamed Michigan College of Mining and Technology in 1927, it now offers work in all the major fields of engineering and science.']

Houghton Firehall Memorial Plaque

[The plaque states: "First home of Michigan Mining School - now Michigan Technological University - 23 students and 4 faculty members for the first Michigan Mining School classes on the second floor of this building in September 1886. The fire hall served as home for the school until the present campus was begun in 1889." This photo shows the plaque mounted on the building.]
