Signs - Delaware |
Sign and Signboards, Historical markers, Seasons, Winter, Woody Plants, Trees |
In order to get this photo of the Delaware Highway sign, the post had to be dug out by the photographer. The snow measuring instruments are across the road from the sign. Delaware is an abandoned copper mining community in Keweenaw County, MI. This county is Michigan's farthest north and its peninsula prong bisects Lake Superior to a great extent. While the folks at home were busy clearing snow for 32 consecutive days, those who had departed knew no task worthy of disturbing their peace. This was Christmas Day at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Lake Linden where the white sparkling snow lay in undisturbed beauty on gravestones of those who no longer have winter griefs to bear. [Serene photo of the cemetery where each of the gravestones wears a cap of snow.]

The Houghton Soldier, marching through the drifts, is wearing the world's coldest imitation mink hat. Heavy snow is predicted for the Copper Country, and conditions could conceivably grow worse after winter begins on Monday. This is the most snow that has ever fallen in the Houghton area by this time of the year, about 82 inches at press time. Truly a monumental fall. Tennis, anyone? [The statue erected in memory of Houghton Company is shown as it appeared after a heavy snowfall.]

In January, 1971 the University of Michigan rocket project was in delaying action at Keweenaw Point. Directed by Dr. Harold Allen of the University's aerospace department, the firing was delayed for an extended period due to the lack of a proper warming trend. The site here is directly at the point. This evidence of a bygone era in railroading is still standing at Lake Mine, the once active mining property in Ontonagon County not far from Greenland. The property of the Copper Range Railroad, the tank rests in an area of heavy snow. To the left is a once-mined bluff, while to the right is the road to Nissula and Alston.
