Ships

Ships, Persons, Manners and Customs, Clothing and Dress The first for 1958 - George M. Irving, skipper of the William P. Cowan, a tanker of the Standard Oil of Indiana fleet, was the first lake captain to go through the Portage Lake Bridge draw this shipping season. This intrepid Scotsman has sailed for Standard Oil for over 25 years. Here, he is shown second from left, receiving a Shanhouse jacket from Einard Kaarto of Stern and Field of Hancock. The Chief Engineer, W. W. Boynton, at right, is presented a Game & Lake Wool Lanorssi dress shirt from Cliff Weber of the Weber Sports Shop in Houghton. The gifts are awards in recognition of being the first big commercial ship personnel to go through the draw. Boynton and Weber were pleasantly suprised to find that both belong to the Consistory and the Ahmed Shrine of Marquette. The chief engineer is a life member of the lodge.
