Quincy and Torch Lake railway is 65 years old this year. Built in 1890 when the old mill on Portage Lake was abandoned for the new one on Torch Lake, the line is still in existence despite the inactivity at the mining enterprise on the "Hill". The rails still lead to the mill at Mason and to the vicinity of the active reclamation plant on Torch Lake. The Q and T L R R still reaches all shafts and main buildings at the mine but the connections with the South Shore route near Mesnard shaft have been removed years ago. The grade is downhill from the mine to the mill and the line was originally ballasted along the plans used by the New York Central railroad. One of the mine's shafts is shown above the 15-ton rock cars of the line and the famed engine house can be seen to the right of the photo. [Photo of mining operations and railway at Quincy.]
