Its men like these who keep the Copper Country alive and well. Carlos Haug, left, exhibits a ring that was awarded to the most famed hockey player ever to represent the Houghton-Calumet region, Dr. John A. Gibson, a member of the Portage Lake World Champions of 1914. With him is former Calumet resident, Alex Nelson, who formerly operated the Parkside Restaurant, one of the renowned eateries of the Calumbet region. Here they stand in front of the Gil-Mar Copper Shoppe, a dispenser of red metal souvenirs. [Carlos Haug was the owner of Haugs Jewelry Store, a downtown Houghton business for over 100 years]

Cities and Towns - Houghton |

Go Ahead, cry in your beer, but the fact of the matter is, Copper Country cars are at least visible beneath their snowy burden. Houghton boasted a paltry 69 inches this morning, hardly enough to fill your galoshes as the photo indicates. It was taken on Shelden Ave. [Image of the street after a snowfall. The dental offices of Dr. Kangas are visible on the upper level of one of the buildings. Dale's Flower and Gift shop is below.]
