Accidents, Fires, Persons, Buildings Residents escaped serious injury when an eighteen unit apartment complex was gutted by fire late Saturday night in Calumet. Sixty firemen from six area fire departments fought the blaze which broke out on the first floor, occupied by the Murphy Drapery Store. High winds hampered efforts to bring the fire under control. (Top) An unidentified Calumet fireman peered through a hole in the ceiling of a third floor apartment to inspect the damage done to the building's rooftop. (Below left) Firemen looked on helplessly as the blaze swept through the three-story apartment complex. (Below right) Residents faced an unpleasant Easter morning as belongings were collected and transported out of their destroyed dwellings. [Images of the aftermath of the fire.]

Accidents, Fires, Persons, Buildings, Church Buildings Sacred Heart Church destroyed by fire! Fire destroyed the church quickly Saturday night. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but the state fire marshall was on the scene Tuesday examining the rubble in an effort to determine what caused the fire. Both the church and rectory were totally destroyed. The smoke kept rising from the ruins which kept Calumet Township there off and on for three days. [Image of the Catholic church fire in progress.]

Accidents, Fires, Arson, Persons, Buildings Three buildings lost - Firefighters had their share of troubles early Sunday morning fighting a blaze in Calumet that destroyed three buildings. A Calumet Township fire truck, toppled at the site due to a hydraulic stabilizer failure. Seven departments responded to the blaze at the intersection of Fifth and Pine streets. Disasters - Fires

Accidents, Fires, Buildings, Commercial Buildings, Exley Building at 107 Front Street in Hancock. The Exley Building dates back to 1879. It began as a sandstone structure. However, the final complete date brought a pair of high class wood and brick boardinghouses. One of the two burned down previously. The building was being used as a six apartment low cost housing unit, a tax service office, and a basement paint shop.
